Since 1994, Linuxers in our country have been trying to do somethings
that could make newbies learn and reach data faster. During this
5 year-time, however, nothing has been gained.
A couple of guys of us, insisted on the idea that there must have been
a Management Commitee to organise the people. Again however, nothing
has been obtained. Others did not agree with the idea. Regardless of
the members of the MC, IMHO, a MC is a must.
Fortunately, a week ago, about 20 Linuxers met to discuss the
necessarity of the MC, and the desired properties of it.
First of all, why do we need a MC ? Is it necessary as hell ?
Yes, we DO need a Management Commitee as hell. Nothing is on the way.
Just some works that some people has been trying to finish out
_personal_. No well-organised projects, no well-done document
hierarchy. We - Linuxers - need a Commitee that should manage us.
Meaning, we - volunteers - should be said that "Do this, deadline is
blah blah". Otherwise, if no MC was accepted, be sure that this
community will not live so long.
Second, what should be the properties of the Management Commitee ?
The people met last week discussed this title too, and agreed to
establish a temporary Commitee with a wide membership. The voting
scheme was democratic, and least defensed a narrow membership.
Thus the MC, with 20(?) members, will represent us until September
1 of this year (First day of Bilisim'99).
Other titles have been discussed also. The one that made some of us
anxious is, the money. The money, that will be gained from some
materials, such as selling CDs, whatever.linux.org.tr e-mail aliases,
etc. Yes, we will earn money. And we MUST, to make Linux Org/Turkey
live. A part-time webmaster will be hired to update website very
often. Who, and how also, will do this ?
"Hey, take this money (80-100M TL) and make www.linux.org.tr up-to-date".
Who of us is rich, and generous also, enough to give this amount
of money in one hand out of his pocket ? If your answer is,
"If we collect, say 1M per head, every month; it would be ok",
then my question is "Why couldn't we do that until now, and who will
force us to give that amount of money, and how will you do that
so systematically ?".
On the other hand, if we will be able to find a sponsor to give us
a one BIG breathe, there's no need to sell some materials for
some time, until we need another big one.
In brief, regardless of the source of the money, we NEED it.
The bottom line is that, The Linux Organisation/Turkey was before,
is now, and will be FREE in the future. Now is the time to write
codes, to attend to conferences (now systematically), to give
briefings, and to stand up.
