LITC - Linux in the classroomy

About

The Linux in the Classroom (LITC) has been an idea of mine ever since I
heard about Linux many years ago. Recently with all the news about
commercial support towards Linux I feel it is necessary to start this
organization. The goal of LITC is to promote the use of Linux in schools.
This includes workstations, not just servers. Linux can be useful from
the the server room to the corner of every classroom.

LITC plans on accomplishing this through many different means:

Installfest (an Installfest is where anyone can come to learn how to
install and use Linux) will be planned and held throughout the United
States and World, via voluntary efforts.

Packets will be available for schools to send for. Each packet will
include a CD with Linux on it, installation instructions, and
information on Linux's use in schools.

There are plans to have seminars, for teachers and interested public,
about Linux and schools. In addition, LITC will use any means
necessary to get our message across.

Educational Operating System and Software Goals

The initial goal of this project is to use available resources to design
and configure a networked system of at least 7 desktop computers for use
in a classroom environment. This system should be cost effective, stable
and easy to use. It should include a complete suite of software
applications suited for the needs of teachers and their students at each
grade level.

We have the go ahead for educational operating system software testing to
be done at the Reeds Spring Vo-Tech. This will include 80-100 students.
They are all very excited and are looking forward to using edos. We hope
to have a demo system installed in the first quarter of 1999.

Below is an outline of issues and goals that should be addressed for this
to begin to take shape. It is offered as a starting point for discussion.
