Addressing a record crowd at LinuxWorld, Oracle Executive Vice President
Charles Rozwat spoke to the rapid acceptance of Linux in the industry and
within Oracle. To that end, Rozwat announced that Oracle is now running its
business on Linux, making good on a promise made by Oracle Chairman and CEO
Larry Ellison a year ago at LinuxWorld 2002.
"By transferring our own mission critical applications to Linux, we are
showing our commitment to this operating system, the Linux community and to
our customers," he said. "In the meantime, we are realizing the same benefits
as our customers -- significant savings related to total cost of ownership."
Rozwat revealed that the company now provides customer support for Linux
running under Oracle products -- at no extra charge -- in 120 countries.
Increased global support shows how Oracle is meeting the demands of customers
deploying Oracle on Linux around the world, he emphasized. "We currently
employ a global support team that is 6,000 strong to provide customers with
direct support of Linux worldwide. As a result of this approach, we have seen
thousands of customers adopt Linux for mission critical applications."
Rozwat also provided new details on the launch of the Oracle Open Source
Development Center -- an online service available through Oracle's online
developer network, OTN. The new service will provide developers with software,
sample code and extensive tutorials, free-of-charge.
Additionally, the company has extended its support for scripting language PHP,
including full integration and shipping with Oracle 9i Application Server. "It
is our goal to be a value-add to the developer community," added Rozwat. "With
the development of the OSDC and our extended support of PHP, we continue to
invest in the Linux development community. This will be an ongoing priority
for us." Rozwat also noted that there have been more than 1 million downloads
of Oracle software for Linux, illustrating the extensive, growing use of
Oracle together with Linux.
Rozwat continued by addressing the future of enterprise computing and Linux's
role in that future, specifically the grid. "We believe that Linux has a
valuable role to play within grid computing," said Rozwat. He added that
attendees would learn more about Linux and the grid at OracleWorld, starting
September 8 in San Francisco.
In conclusion, Rozwat spoke to the evolution of Linux that has lead to a mass
adoption of the operating system. "It is not a question of if, but when Linux
will be a part of a company's technology portfolio," said Rozwat. "Linux has
arrived and the software companies who embrace and support it, like Oracle,
provide customers with the best that Linux has to offer."
