Version 4.1 of Berkeley DB includes some significant new features
over version 4.0.
First, and most importantly, 4.1 adds support for strong encryption
of the data stored on disk. We have added an interface that allows
you to encrypt pages before they are written from the Berkeley DB
memory cache to disk, and to decrypt the pages when they are read
from disk into memory. This encryption support uses the 3DES
algorithm, but you can replace it with any other block cipher that
you like. It protects your data in the event that your database
files are stolen from disk.

Second, we have made a number of substantial performance improvements
for multi-processor systems that use Berkeley DB in multi-threaded
and multi-process applications. We have made locks finer-grained,
shortened critical sections and reduced contention for read-only and
read-write workloads.
Third, we have made a number of improvements to the High Availability
product introduced in version 4.0. Those changes include performance
improvements and bug fixes, and any application developer using
High Availability should download and use version 4.1 of Berkeley
DB HA in favor of 4.0.

Because Berkeley DB is embedded in applications for which strong
encryption may not be appropriate, we are making two versions of
this distribution available. One includes the encryption code and
one does not. You may choose which distribution you want to use
at the time that you download the software. The two versions are
otherwise identical. The download page includes instructions for
choosing the distribution you want.
The license for Berkeley DB permits you to download and use the
software at no charge. If you embed Berkeley DB in an application
that you distribute to more than one physical site, you must
release make the complete source code for the application that
embeds Berkeley DB freely available under an open source license.
If you are not able to release the source code for the application,
you may purchase a license for proprietary use of Berkeley DB
from Sleepycat Software.
Also, please note that we're working on a new Sleepycat product,
Berkeley DB XML, which will add support for native storage and
retrieval of XML data using Berkeley DB. We expect to make
