2004 Online Ad Spend: Search Is Hot, But Contextual Pollution Of Figures
Continues [http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/050429-094023]
SEW Blog, Apr. 29, 2005

Online ad spending figures for all of 2004 were recently released by the
IAB. What do they show specifically for search? Up, up, up, no matter how
you want to slice it, though mixing in spending on contextual ads doesn't
give a completely clear figure. A summary in this post.

An extended post
[http://searchenginewatch.com/_subscribers/articles/article.php/3501451] for
Search Engine Watch members
[http://searchenginewatch.com/benefits/article.php] looks in depth at the
giant flaw with report, the failure to break out contextual ads from search.
They aren't the same as search, as I explain -- and counting them as search
pollutes the data. I also look at how the recent Google CPM pricing for
contextual ads is finally generating more awareness that contextual isn't
search, as well as what I've written before, that Google and Yahoo aren't
tech companies, aren't search companies but are ad or media companies.

Last week, AOL became the largest online service to offer the comparatively
new pay-per-call format to search advertisers. Pay-per-call is rapidly
gaining traction among search marketers, especially those targeting a local
audience, and if you're not familiar with the format, it's worth a look. The

Google Addressing 302 Redirection Hijacking Issues
[http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/050420-094116]

highlights comments from GoogleGuy in this WebmasterWorld thread
[www.webmasterworld.com/forum30/28742-8-15.htm] that Google is making
changes to help ease concerns that by using redirection, others might hijack

Dissecting Yahoo Search Redirection Codes
[http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/050420-082446]
SEW Blog, Apr. 20, 2005

Last year, I did a breakdown
[http://searchenginewatch.com/_subscribers/articles/article.php/3369631] for
Search Engine Watch members of what all those parameters mean that are
embedded within a Yahoo redirection string. Huh? When you click on a listing
at Yahoo, you're actually redirected through Yahoo's own servers and certain
information embedded in the redirection URL is recorded. Nacho Hernandez
spots some new one ones since I wrote about this last year and tries his own
dissection in Stripping out the Guts of a Yahoo! Search URL
[www.seroundtable.com/archives/001834.html] at Search Engine Roundtable.
Ideally, no one would have to dissect at all -- Yahoo would just explain
what the codes mean. I asked last year, but no one ever got back on that
particular question :). OK, I'll be asking again. Meanwhile, want to discuss
or contribute? Visit our forum thread, Defining the Yahoo! Search URL
Parameters [http://forums.searchenginewatch.com/showthread.php?t=5320].

Stanford University's Student Paper & Selling Links
[http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/050419-102946]
SEW Blog, Apr. 19, 2005

The Stanford Daily Selling Links
[http://forums.searchenginewatch.com/showthread.php?t=5282] thread at our
Search Engine Watch Forums looks at the ironic situation of the student
newspaper at Stanford University -- the birthplace of Google, Yahoo and
owner of the PageRank patent -- selling off-topic links to advertisers who
almost certainly are trying to get better rankings on search engines. For
Search Engine Watch members, the extended version
[http://searchenginewatch.com/_subscribers/articles/article.php/3498761] of
this article goes into more depth of how why these links have raised
eyebrows, given that some would view them as hurting search relevancy. It
also looks at why university newspapers have become a popular source for
those wanting to buy links to influence search engines, including a short
tour of how papers beyond Stanford are selling. The members version
[http://searchenginewatch.com/_subscribers/articles/article.php/3498761]
also covers how link selling has become commonplace and why publishers wary
of a public relations problem might wish to sell only redirected or nofollow
links.

Overture Becomes Yahoo Search Marketing & Comparing Listing Products At
Yahoo To Google [http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/050418-094844]
SEW Blog, Apr. 18, 2005

The rebranding promised in March has happened. Overture has officially
become Yahoo Search Marketing, marked by the launch of a new Yahoo Search
Marketing site that lists all of Yahoo's search-related listing products.
It's a good change that ought to help new advertisers. But with rebranding
can come confusion, so I thought it would be helpful to look at all the
products listed at the new site and also compare them to Google products.
This post provides a chart-form summary. Search Engine Watch members should
read the members version
[http://searchenginewatch.com/_subscribers/articles/article.php/3498391]
that provides commentary and additional advice and information about each
listing area.

Google Tests Three Ads At Top Of Results
[http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/050415-053053]
SEW Blog, Apr. 15, 2005

Did you see three ads at the top of Google search results, rather than the
one or two that sometimes appear? If so, it wasn't your imagination.
AdWordsRep, Google's official rep for AdWords who participates in our Search
Engine Watch Forums, confirmed to a member asking that there's a test going
on. "AdWords tends to test stuff from time to time, and you're seeing one
such test. Probably only a few folks will see it, and then not for long.
It's not a permanent change." Want to comment or discuss? Visit the thread
he commented in, 3 Ads at top of Listings
[http://forums.searchenginewatch.com/showthread.php?t=5244]. How do you get
into the existing two "text banner" positions that have traditionally
showed? Top position? Impossible?
[http://forums.searchenginewatch.com/showthread.php?t=2952] is another
thread with AdWords rep explains how some ads end up in this position.

Forget Desktop Search -- Tag Your Content With Longhorn
[http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/050502-132138]
By Danny Sullivan, May. 2, 2005

While Apple's touting its bundled desktop search as a leading feature of its
new OS, Microsoft is downplaying the idea that many once had that desktop
search would be a killer component of its next-generation Windows operating
system, Longhorn. Will Longhorn Try to Rival Google?
[www.pcworld.com/resource/article/0,aid,120643,pg,1,RSS,RSS,00.asp] from the
IDG news service write that Longhorn will instead aim to provide
visualization and tagging tools to help people better organize information.
While I've been dubious

The Search for Music [http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/050501-132506]

I'm a frequent user of AllMusic.com [www.allmusic.com], a wonderful
specialized database full of musician bios, track listings and much more.
One feature (similar services are available at ITunes and elsewhere) is the
ability to browse/search for music by mood, genre, theme, instrument, etc.

Searching For Gas Prices

By Danny Sullivan, Apr. 19, 2005

High Gas Prices Fuel Search Engine Usage
[www.searchengineguide.com/laycock/004121.html] from Jennifer Laycock at
Search Engine Guide talks about two gas price search engines (GasBuddy.com
[www.gasbuddy.com] & GasPriceWatch.com [www.gaspricewatch.com]) that help
those in the US find the lowest prices to fill up. FYI, both Yahoo and Ask
Jeeves have shortcuts to get you prices, as well. At either Ask Jeeves or
Yahoo, enter "gas" plus a zip code, such as gas 92663
[http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=gas%2092663], and you'll get links to the
two sites mentioned above. Of course, it's faster to go to the gas price
sites directly and get the answers. But, if you can't remember them offhand,
this is a quick way to find them and have links already set for your local
area. Now what would be really cool is if someone whipped up prices placed
against a map. When it happens, as I'm sure it will, we'll bring news.

The Mobile Searcher and Medical Information
[http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/050418-153133]
By Gary Price, Apr. 18, 2005

The combo of mobile and local search is all the rage
[http://searchenginewatch.com/searchday/article.php/3498296] these days but
mobile access to health and medical info/research has been building momentum
for several years. In fact, the National Library of Medicine released a
mobile interface to PubMed back in 2003
[www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/techbull/ja03/ja03_pda.html] and since then has
released several other mobile tools. This new compilation
[www.nlm.nih.gov/mobile] has intro info and links to the growing list of
resources that NLM offers mobile web searchers. Since the topic is mobile
search and health info, I recently learned that a mobile versions of the
Merck Manual [www.merckmedicus.com/pp/us/hcp/hcp_mobile_medicus.jsp] and
other reference tools are available (free).

TiVo Talks to Google and Yahoo

By Gary Price, Apr. 18, 2005

News.com reports in TiVo courts search giants
[http://news.com.com/2100-1041_3-5673225.html] that unnamed sources are
saying that the digital video recording company is in talks with both Yahoo
and Google about some type of partnership. Another source says that TiVo is
also talking to both companies about a possible equity investment. No one
from TiVo, Google, or Yahoo would comment on the story. Last month, TiVo
announced a major partnership

Google Sues Froogles Over Its Name
[http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/050415-183907]
By Gary Price, Apr. 15, 2005

Last July we posted an item to the SEW Forums
[http://forums.searchenginewatch.com/showthread.php?p=6582] about Google
asking ICANN (the domain name organization) to not allow Froogles
[www.froogles.com] (a discount shopping site) to use the domain because it
was "confusingly similar" to Google. Google lost
[www.usatoday.com/tech/news/techpolicy/2004-07-23-froogle-flux_x.htm]. Now
the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports

Google has now filed suit against Froogles in a U.S. federal court alleging

AOL Tweaks Search Interface; Offering Links to ITunes
[http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/050415-104229]
By Gary Price, Apr. 15, 2005

I noticed a tweak to the AOL Search [http://search.aol.com] interface this
morning. Until today, a tab labeled "Audio and Video" (cached version)
[www.gigablast.com/get?q=search.aol.com&c=main&rtq=0&d=26218733146] linked
to an interface that searched both types of content. You'll now see that
audio and video search have separate tabs on the home page
[http://search.aol.com/aolcom/webhome] and separate interfaces (audio
[http://search.aol.com/aolcom/audiohome] |video
[http://search.aol.com/aolcom/videohome]). I also noticed (possibly late to
the party with this item) that some results found when searching for audio
with AOL Search offer direct links ITunes. For example, I searched for
Chemical Brothers
[http://search.aol.com/aolcom/audio?invocationType=topsearchbox.audio&catego
ry=&duration=&query=chemical+brothers] and found a link labeled "ITunes"
next to the first "featured" result. Clicking it opened my ITunes app and
took me directly to The Chemical Brothers ITunes page.

Search Is Also Navigation, So Brands -- Are You Well Represented?
By Danny Sullivan, Apr. 15, 2005

It's been long known that searchers don't just use search engines to find
things but also depend on search to navigate to sites of interest. Search
can be a sort of warp drive to get you to that site whose URL you can't
remember or that you find too bulky to type into the address bar. Getting

navigational queries and how they may impact brand owners not properly
indexed by search engines.
