Open source alternative ?Wienux? launched in Vienna
On 5 July 2005 the Vienna City Council presented Wienux, a special
version of the Linux operating system designed for use by the city
authorities.
The presentation of Wienux by Viennese city councillor Rudi Schicker
signalled the beginning of the city?s migration to open source software
(OSS). From now on, thousands of local administration employees will be
free to decide to use Wienux and the OpenOffice productivity suite
instead of the Microsoft products currently installed in the city?s
desktops. "Anyone who wants to can take the open source path?, the City
Council explained in a press release.
About 7,500 of the Austrian capital's 18,000 computer users may now
decide to switch from Microsoft Office to OpenOffice, while 4,800 of them
will also be given the choice to switch to the Linux-based operating
system. It is expected that an evaluation will be carried out in a year
before a decision is made regarding a further extension of the scheme.
Similarly to Munich?s LiMux, Wienux runs under the GNU General Public
License and was developed on the basis of the Debian GNU/Linux
distribution. Users choosing the ?open source path? will have access to a
wide range of applications, including Mozilla?s Firefox web browser.
