Topic: Using ICT To Support Education For All (EFA) In The Fast Track
Initiative Countries

Program Description:

Investment in ICT in education has grown steadily over the past decade and
its increasing profile and importance are visible in both developed and
developing countries. Despite this known increase, little is known about
the effectiveness of investments in ICT in education in promoting
education reform in general and in Education for All (EFA) in particular,
and there is little hard evidence or consensus on the proper,
cost-effective utilization of ICTs in this field.

Messrs McNamara and Trucano are preparing a joint infoDev-HDNED report
which aims at creating a knowledge map of the impact of ICTs in education
to date, with particular emphasis on the role of technology roles in
achieving EFA goals. They will investigate the role of ICT in both
access to and quality of education, and will, as part of the study,
examine the WB's portfolio of education projects, review donor support for
ICT related projects for the Fast Track Initiative countries and document
best practice and lessons learned in ICT in education. This is the first
phase of a larger infoDev project on these issues funded by the European
Commission.

Two deliverables are expected: a knowledge map of known ICT components in
education projects, and a road map for a larger, EC-supported project to
be implemented in the next fiscal cycle.

The authors will be presenting their progress on this report and lead a
discussion of the relevance of their work to the Bank's operational
projects in education.
