Dear LinuxWorld Subscriber:

There's no doubt that 1998 was a very good year for Linux, but as
LinuxWorld Editorial Director Nick Petreley writes in his most
recent column, Linux's success remains far from a sure thing. The
way Nick sees it, should Microsoft win its current case with the
U.S. Department of Justice, the future of Linux will take a sudden
and drastic turn for the worse. The reason: ISV support. Read Nick's
column and find out why the Linux community should take nothing for
granted, and what it can do to ensure that Linux flourishes.

While we're on the subject of Microsoft, I recommend Joe Barr's
interesting column on FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt) and its
history in high technology. If last fall's Halloween memos are any
indication, Microsoft is only at the beginning of what could be a
major FUD campaign against Linux.

On the other hand, if you're too busy working to care much about the
strategy and machinations of the high technology industry,
LinuxWorld has something for you too. We've recently published a
step-by-step guide to compiling the Apache Web server.

We've also got a story on FreeBSD. If you've ever met a FreeBSD
enthusiast, you've probably wondered why they love this
Berkeley-derived Unix so darned much. LinuxWorld writers Cameron
Laird and Kathryn Soraiz explain why.

Eric Allman just released the first commercial version of his
popular sendmail mail server. If you've wondered what
commercialization has done to sendmail, you can get the answer here,
from Eric's own lips.

Finally, the U.S. government published changes to its encryption
regulations last week and already one industry group -- Americans
for Computer Privacy -- says the revisions fall short. Find out
why.
