I. A Perspective on 1999

1) Newest Millionaire on the block - Thawte Founder
---------------------------------------------------

If you haven't already heard, Thawte, the second largest certificate
provider on the net, and one that would have been destined to be the
largest, has agreed to be bought by Verisign for a cool $575 million.

Quoting Mark Shuttleworth, Thawte's owner, founder and CEO,
from a letter on their site, "It's an extraordinary offer from an
extraordinary company, and I'm still trying to come to terms with
its implications for the Thawte team and myself."

Congratulations, Mark and team, for a job well done.

Now let's just hope that the price of certificates will not go up...

2) The Web Server Enhanced Capability Fight
-------------------------------------------

Earlier on in the year, we predicted that Microsoft and Apache were
going to start beating each other up for market share in the web
server market. Well, there's an interesting battle going on all
right, but if you don't look carefully, you might miss it.

At first glance, not much seems to be going on. In Dec of 1998,
Apache held a 52.53% market share, and Microsoft a 23.53%. Today
that's 55.83% and 26.25%, not much to talk about.

But, what we missed at the start of the year (and have since been
reporting on) is the fact that the real battle is taking place in
extending the web server's capability sets. For Microsoft, that
means Active Server Pages, while for Apache, that means server
side scripting in the form of PHP and Perl.

Now we don't have good numbers for ASP from last year, but if we
take a look at PHP (where we do have the information), we see that
PHP ended last year being installed on 10.08% of Apache servers,
but moved up to 23.85% of all Apache servers one year later. The
nearest Apache competitor is Perl, at 6.46%, moving up from 2.75% a
year ago.

====================================================================
II. Web Server Surveys

1) The Web's Not That Big - Honest!
-----------------------------------

We've been reporting on our Survey now for over a year now and we are
consistently asked about our survey size. It appears that one of our
competitors compiles a survey that shows there are over 9.5 million
sites, while we show 1.9 million. Why the big difference?

Well, the answer is in the methodology. For over a year, E-Soft has
been selective in adding sites to the survey. We will only include
servers that we find referenced on someone else's site. That means
if your site isn't truly on the web (i.e. reachable via another
site), we won't include it. Not only that, but any site included in
the survey that fails to respond to the survey for three consecutive
months, is automatically dropped from our database and not added
again until a new link is found to it.

So, although there may be almost 10 million web sites, by our
estimate almost 80% of them would appear to be "orphans" to which
there are no links.

2) Secure Web Server Market Share Change
----------------------------------------

IV. Company News

1) Security Zone - A New Look
-----------------------------
For the past several months we've hosted a web page called the
"Security Zone", a simple compilation of resource sites, various
security product vendors, and so on.

The page has been quite popular, and due to this demand, we've
expanded this area of our web site, turning it into a true
on-line security directory.

For security vendors: in most cases we've taken descriptions
directly from your web sites in an attempt to make the product/
service descriptions as relevant as possible to your product.
We encourage you to check the entries however, and suggest
any changes and updates as necessary.

The Security Zone is located at
http://www.e-softinc.com/szone/index.html

2) Newsletter circulation breaks 1000
