Dear Reader,

Are you closed minded about closed source? Do you use Linux
just because you hate Microsoft? Maybe it's time to open your
mind a bit. Open source is about more than just software: it's
a philosophy.

Tim O'Reilly, in his Ask Tim column, reminds us what we miss if
we have a closed mind towards closed source software. Mukund Iyer
addresses the hatred between the open source and closed source
communities and shows what can be gained by simple cooperation.
Michael Stutz, in Living Linux, takes open source beyond software
and applies the philosophy to other projects.

Behind the Curtain
by Mukund Iyer
in Features
In the years of the rise of open software and the general open
movement, I have noticed a sense of almost hate in people who
support the open movement, towards companies which don't, like
Microsoft, etc. A sort of an iron wall has formed between those
who associate themselves with the open movement, and those who don't.
Why has this wall formed? Why doesn't a geek want to be associated
with products on the Windows platform? Why do people say, "Hey, I
haven't booted Windows for the past 8 months!"? Let us take the
example of Microsoft.

Welcome to Live!
by Mark Stone
People are the real ease of use advantage of Linux. We all learned
this way: tentatively asking newbie questions on Usenet; bringing
our motley collection of hardware to LUG Installfests; hunting down
mailing lists focused on Linux. Gradually the people that make up
the Linux community brought us along, and now we turn to others to
lend a helping hand.

Windows users have nothing like this support group. Even Mac
aficianados most frequently say that the Mac community "used to
be like this."

Gimp for Newbies, Part 2
by Alex Pearsall
By now, you've familiarized yourself with some of the more basic
functions of this wonderful graphics program, The GIMP. You've used
basic paint brushes, and experimented with some of the tools that
you see in the toolbar. Maybe you've even dabbled briefly in the art
of Script-FU. Either way, this informational piece should help you
unearth some of the more interesting and funky dialogs of The GIMP -
things such as variable Blurs, Distorts, Light effects, and other
additions to your image which may make it look more professional or
interesting. We will also cover basic layers, and how to convert
your Layered GIMP drawing into a JPEG, PNG or GIF.
