Around the Web
This month the number of hosts found by the survey exceed seven
million, a rise of a million in just three months.
Apache again lost percentage share, partly due to the fast growing
[1]FreeServe business, which runs a lightly modified version of Apache
with the server signature set to _CnG_. The controvesy surrounding the
[2]Mindcraft performance tests has also seemed to focus attention on
performance oriented alternatives and benefit Zeus and thttpd. The
rise in Netscape share is primarily due to a system run by Network
Soluations which hosts template sites for a large number of domains.
Although the Mindcraft tests were done on a very uncommon configuration,
they stimulated a lot of attention and activity on the Linux scheduler
and Apache performance. One interesting idea to appear is [3]khttpd,
a server that services simple requests inside the Linux kernel
while palming off anything more sophisticated to a "proper"
server such as Zeus or Apache. Meanwhile, Silicon Graphics have
contributed some significant patches to the Apache project which
considerably improve the benchmark performance of the server.
