Apache Status
_Apache Site_: [11]www.apache.org
_Release:_ 1.3.6 (Released 25th March 1999) ([12]local download sites)
_Beta:_ None
Apache 1.3.6 is the current stable release. Users of Apache 1.3.4 and
earlier on Unix systems should upgrade to this version. Read the
[13]Guide to 1.3.6 for information about changes between 1.3.4 and
1.3.6 and between 1.2 and 1.3.6.
Most bugs listed below include a link to the entry in the Apache bug
database where the problem is being tracked. These entries are called
"PR"s (Problem Reports). Some bugs do not correspond to problem
reports if they are found by developers.
Bugs in 1.3.6
These bugs have been found in 1.3.6 and will be fixed in the next
release.
* ASCII/EBCDIC conversions were not handled correctly for ident
requests. This affects TPF and BS2000 platforms
* Some warnings are given when compiling on various Macintosh
platforms.
* The mod_rewrite directives RewriteLock, RewriteMap do not work
correctly with virtual hosts. [14]PR#3874
* IP addresses with specified netmasks (such as 192.168.2.4/24) were
not correctly handled by mod_acess. [15]PR#4770
Under Development
Patches for bugs in Apache 1.3.6 will be made available in the
apply_to_1.3.6 subdirectory of the [16]patches directory on the Apache
site. Some new features and other unofficial patches are available in
the [17]1.3 patches directory. For details of all previously reported
bugs, see the Apache [18]bug database and [19]known bugs pages. Many
common configuration questions are answered in the [20]Apache FAQ.
Netscape Style Passwords Supported
Netscape web servers use a different password encoding scheme to
Apache. This means that if you move password protection from a
Netscape server to an Apache-based one, you will have to re-issue all
existing users' new passwords. From the next release, Apache will
support Netscape style encrypted passwords allowing easy migration.
Simple Log File Rotation
A small third-party utility has been written to allow log files to be
quickly split and processed. The utility creates a new log file for
each day with the date as the extension. When a new log file is
created the old one is post-processed, allowing it to be compressed or
moved to another location, for example. The utility, logbox, is
currently available from
[21]ftp://ftp.lemuria.org/pub/Code/logbox.tar.gz
Support for Tandem Computers machines
The next release of Apache will compile and run on Tandem Computers
machines.
Next Apache Release
A new release of the version 1.3 Apache web server is currently being
worked on. The new release will fix a number of the problems and bugs
that we've mentioned over the past few months as well as adding a few
small new features and some improved platform support. It was
originally anticipated that the new version, 1.3.7, would be released
this week but last minute testing found an additional problem. Because
of this, 1.3.7 was not publically released and the next public version
is likely to be 1.3.8. We will have a full round-up of the new release
in Apache Week shortly after it becomes available.
Apache in the News
Dr. Dobbs Journal reports on [22]The Negotiator. The story looks at
one of the Apache Group members who was instrumental in IBM's
involvement in Apache as well as the recent move by Sun to release
Java pages code to the the Apache Foundation.
