Linux at the police in the german state "Baden Württemberg"

Already two years ago, the home office (department for inner affairs) in
Baden-Würtemberg decided to equip all it's police stations with LANs and to
connect the LANs to build a WAN. It was planed to handle the following
services over the WAN:

1. The communication of the offices via e-mail, which should
be a replacement for the teletypers.
2. The data-transfer between the IT-departments via FTP.
3. A webserver to provide information.
4. Ordering of uniforms via a intranet-shop.
5. Education of policemen via multimedia-applications, also a hotline
6. Fileserver for management-tasks
7. etc.

The Landeskriminalamt of the state was charged with the actual
implementation of the network. They decided very early to use Linux on i486
processors for their routers. That means, the Linux-machines became the job
of connecting the individual LANs with leased ISDN-lines and routing the
data-packages accordingly. S.u.S.E. was choosed as the
distributor. Currently the version 5.3 is used. The machines have been used
in this configuration for a longer period and have been approved as far as
I know.

Linux is also used as a server operating system in some offices, for
example at the main office of the highway police in Stuttgart (capital city
of the state), the office I belong to. We have 7 offices, which are
located as far as 100 Kilometer from our main one. Server machines of the
categories i486 or Pentium with Linux S.u.S.E. 5.3 are deployed at all
offices. In addition, the Webserver Apache 1.3 is installed at some
offices. We even deploy a Mail- and News-Server for communications with our
local system administrators at the offices.

The databaseserver MySQL is installed at our main server, to record
statistical data. The data is sent from NT-Workstations via
Netscape-Browser and HTML-forms to the Apache-Webserver, where a
perl-script is used to write the data into the database. [Started a new
sentence -Winfried] The data is evaluated in the same manner.

On this basis we are currently developing a system to warn against jam on
the highway. We are confident, that this project will be finished within
the next two months.

Linux has prooved to satisfied our needs. The server are running for a long
time without any outages. I know of many colleagues, who use Linux as a
server and their number is appearently increasing. The reason for this is
the proverbial reliability and stability, the nearly unlimited applications
of Linux and last but not least the costs. So the usage of Linux in this area
is not only an advantage for the tax payer.

Almost I forgot to mention: Linux is also used for bridges. Here old i386 are
used - a cheaper alternative does not exist.

I hope that this little essay motivates other organisations and companies
to try out Linux, or at least to consider it. I am convinced, that you
won't regret it.
