*Educom Instructional Management Systems Adds New Partners. Educom's NLII
Instructional Management Systems (IMS) project is developing standards for
and a prototype of a system for managing the learning experience in a
networked environment. Initiated by four higher education institutions --
the California State University, the University of North Carolina-Chapel
Hill, the University of Michigan, and Miami-Dade Community College -- the
IMS project initially recruited additional investment partners to ensure
that the standards will reflect a broad range of best practices and market
needs: Apple Computer, Buena Vista University, the Committee on
Institutional Cooperation, IBM, International Thomson Publishing, KPMG Peat
Marwick, and Sun Microsystems. Most recently, a number of additional
partners have joined the project: Farance Inc., @Learning, Empower
Corporation, COLLEGIS, the Learning Technology Research Institute, the U.S.
Department of Defense, NIST/US Department of Commerce, JISC (the Joint
Information Systems Committee which runs JANET, the academic part of the
Internet in the U.K.), Microsoft, and Intel. For more information, see

*ARL, CAUSE, Educom, and Xerox Endow Paul Evan Peters Awards Program.
Established in 1997, this program aims to recognize the impact and promise
of high-performance networks on scholary research and communication. A
first call for nominations has been issued as is available online at

*1997 CAUSE ELITE Award Goes to Paul Evan Peters. CAUSE announced in
December that its top individual honor -- the Award for Exemplary
Leadership and Information Technology Excellence (ELITE Award) -- was given
posthumously to Paul Evan Peters, founding executive director of the
Coalition for Networked Information (CNI). The award is designed to honor
leaders within the field of higher education information resources
management for significant lifetime achievement and broad impact on the
institutions they have served, the wider higher education mission, and the

*Write Software for the World's First Computer. Computer experts and
novices are invited to enter a competition to write a software program for
the world's first stored-program digital computer, Baby, which is being
rebuilt to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its birth on June 21, 1948 at
the University of Manchester, England. Sponsored by Sebastian de Ferranti,
whose company turned the Baby into the Ferranti Mark 1 commercial computer
in 1951. A panel chaired by Emeritus Professor Tom Kilburn of the
University of Manchester, who wrote the world's first computer program,
will judge the entries. Closing date for entries in March 31, 1998. For

accessible online through the American Chemical Society's new site,
ChemPort. More than 200 journals are accessible, as well as the world's

and examples for college student volunteers on how to start a volunteer
