Tesekkurler.

Safa Gurcan.

It is time to do a major overhaul of the network PC running the show
for us. It represents a major security problem in my opinion. We
are running Linux 1.2.xx as you know, with source code absent and
likely too many improper implementations of the source code. As you
know, the people at xxx originally put together the mess which has
our mail,Web,ftp, gopher(?) server running on autopilot. I seriously
doubt the xxx people have even looked at things, although xxx Bey
is probably paying them sound money to run a tight operation.

I will try to be doing some net reading myself in the near future,
but the first question that needs answering is which distribution of
Linux should we go to?

I know of two. (1) Slackware --which is what we are running, I
think--and (2) red hat. I think there are 3 or 4 others. We need to
get some info as to which distribution is best for our purposes. One
may be good for the home user who has no reason to run server
software and is only using it as a PC but running Unix instead of
MS-DOS, while another is ideal for the business with a host on the
Internet. I would like to learn the strengths/advantages of each
distribution. I think you are thinking about installing a BSD-type
Unix instead of a SysV-type (like Linux). I know the BSD-type is
probably better with respect to being a network-oriented operating
system, but I know of no one in Turkey running a BSD-type Unix, and
since they don't pay us to tinker all day with these systems, we may
be forced to using a Linux system (even though they may really suck
as network-oriented systems).
